Rebuild Destroyed Bookshops

YOU HELPED Rebuild Destroyed Bookshops!

Our Dear Friends, we are so grateful for your care and generous support for the Bible Work in Egypt.  We have now received complete funding to pay for the rebuilding of our bookshops!

We hope to finish and open the Minya Bookshop in just weeks (early November).  As for Assiut, where the damage was much more extensive, we are almost done with all of the refurbishing work, and plan to open the bookshop before Easter 2014.  Meanwhile, we have arranged to have a temporary outlet with a large room that opens out onto the street, from which to continue distribution.  We will be advertising and promoting this outlet so that people know where easily know where to go.

If you were planning to contribute, please remember that most of our Bibles are sold at less than half of the real cost! Your gift will make an impact in making God’s word easily available and affordable in Egypt.

In the days that followed the attacks on 14 August 2013, many of the people in these cities have found bits and pieces of the Scripture products that were scattered in the destruction. Bishop Barsoum in Assiut encouraged the bookshop staff, saying, “Don’t be distressed. The bookshops will be rebuilt and will be more beautiful than ever. And all of the Scriptures that have been ripped and cast into the wind will spread the Gospel to many throughout the city!”  We praise the Lord for this unintentional free distribution project!!

The Assiut bookshop was destroyed with fire, and the Minya bookshop was also looted and destroyed completely from within and the products thrown outside to be burned in the street.  One reason that the Minya bookshop was not burned was because a Muslim doorkeeper nearby reasoned with the attackers, reminding them that in the process they would also destroy many other businesses and homes

A few days after the attacks, another Muslim doorkeeper came to the destroyed shop and gave them several bills that were wrapped up and splattered in blood, the amount of 800 EGP (equivalent of $116, but worth much more in local value).  He had found it in the street in front of the bookshop.

Burned-BiblesOne bishop stated, concerning the destruction of our bookshops, “They chose the right place to attack, because everyone will sympathize no matter their background!”

Another priest said, in appreciation of the role of the BSOE bookshops, “The Bible Society spreads God’s Word everywhere, while we are limited to our own churches.”

One friend of the Bible Society encouraged the bookshop staff, saying, “If you weren’t effective, Satan wouldn’t fight against you.  Be encouraged, for great is the harvest!”

Immediately following the attacks on more than 85 churches and Christian institutions, the leader of the Coptic Church, Pope Towadros II said, “Do they really think that burning churches is revenge?  It is actually a redeeming act, which we offer with love to our country.”

This past weekend, a Kingo event for children was held in the slums of North Cairo.  Over 600 children came to attend and the church leaders joyfully gave thanks for this Bible Society program which was a tool to help children overcome their fears and come back to church.  Church attendance has been severely cut as people fear for their lives. “Kingo will help us revive the Sunday Schools!”
